Who should you call before you dig?
To find utility locating services near you, contact 811 before you dig.
Here’s how it works:
-
Dial 811 from anywhere in the country a few days prior to digging, and your call will be routed to your local One Call Center. Or, make an online request for utilities to be marked (where available).
-
Tell the operator where you are planning to dig and what type of work you will be doing.
-
Your affected local utility companies will be notified about your intent to dig.
-
Within a few days, they will send a locator to mark the approximate location of your underground lines, pipes and cables, so you’ll know what’s below – and be able to dig safely.
Remember, make sure you play it safe and always contact 811 before you start any digging project! You will avoid injury, expense, embarrassment – and a very inconvenient day in the dark.
Is it free to call 811?
Yes. You will not be charged for the utility location services provided to you by 811. The costs of these services are covered in their entirety by your local utility company.
For more information or to make an online request for utilities to be marked (where available), contact your local One Call Center.
